Specialty Contact Lens

Have you had trouble wearing contact lenses or been told you’re not a good candidate for contacts? You simply may have eyes that are “hard to fit”. Don’t worry — this doesn’t always mean you can’t wear contact lenses. Our optometrists have experience in specialty contact lens fitting and will welcome the opportunity to work with you to accomplish your visual needs.

Our optometrists in Edmonton offer exams for individuals who have been told they are “hard to fit” for contact lenses. If you have been told you are not a good candidate for contact lenses because of an eye condition such as astigmatism, dry eyes, keratoconus, giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), presbyopia or post-refractive surgery, this does not necessarily mean that you can never wear contact lenses. Our optometrists are experienced in fitting contact lenses for hard-to-fit patients. Using the latest technology and advanced equipment, we are able to precisely measure your cornea in order to achieve the best contact lens fit possible.

For example, in patients with keratoconus and other corneal disease, scleral contacts are a specialty contact lens option that can often achieve better vision than what is possible with glasses or standard soft contact lenses.

Astigmatism is a common ocular condition where the shape of the front of the eye is not perfectly round. Often it is described as being “football” shaped or “egg” shaped. Most people have some degree of astigmatism. Sometimes it can be ignored in contact lenses without having much of an effect on vision, and sometimes it can’t. If you have a very high amount of astigmatism, sometimes specialty contact lenses are required such as customed made soft lenses. If you have (or suspect you have) any of these conditions and you want to wear contacts, book your consultation with us today.
